Something to think about: attractive character design
Hi, kitties 👋
Do you know the
difference between an attractive character and an attractive character design?
A little hint - in the second case, the character itself does not necessarily
have to be the sex symbol of the generation 😄
From what I see, many
artists often confuse these two concepts. Especially beginner artists. An
attractive design does not equal a beautiful/cute character by default. This is
something more - an interesting character. The one that attracts the eye. Makes
you want to look at it and learn more about it. Even the design of the monster
can be attractive.
So how exactly can we
achieve this? 🤔 Unfortunately, there is no working recipe on
how to create a character interesting to everyone. Just like our food
preferences, the visual perception of attractiveness depends on the
individual's taste. BUT! There are general rules by which we can get as close
as possible to this ideal point. Below are my top tips for you on this topic:
Breaking down a complex character into simple geometric
shapes is not only a good way to better understand the volume and correctly
"place" the light. The interaction of these forms and their
harmonious (and sometimes unusual) combinations add individuality and interest
to the character.
But remember that everything should be in moderation. Do
not go overboard with the number of shapes or their variety as it can create a
sense of chaos. Confuse the viewer. It is better to make a choice in favor of a
simpler, but more clear design, than an overcomplicated cluster of details and
elements.
2. Color 🎨
A correctly selected color palette will help both to draw
attention to the necessary elements of the drawing and to convey the mood of
the character. This is a very powerful tool that is capable of adding
attractiveness to a picture as well as completely ruining the desire to look at
it.
If you (like me 😅) sometimes have difficulty choosing colors, use color
schemes. They were invented for a reason. These schemes work great and will
help you to better understand the principle of working with color. Moreover, by
practicing this way in time you will be able to choose colors more confidently
and without additional help.
3. Storytelling 🎭
Who is your character? Where does he live? What does he
do? What are his likes and goals? Answers to these (and similar) questions
allow you to bring interesting details and elements to the design that will
help the viewer better understand the character.
Have you decided to make a brave pirate who lost one leg
in an unequal battle with a sea monster? Great! But who said that his
artificial limb must necessarily be made from an ordinary piece of wood? Make
it from the horns (or spine, or scales) of the same monster. This unusual,
interesting detail will tell the story of your pirate without a wall of text in
the description (which, let's be honest, almost no one reads 😒).
With few exceptions, humans are empathetic creatures.
They like to associate themselves with the heroes of the stories they
read/watch. Therefore, you should not ignore the elements of storytelling in
the drawing.
In summary: even a poisonous swamp monster can have an attractive design if you put enough effort and love into its creation. Everything is in your hands 🙂
